1-Hexadecanol appears as white, flake-like crystals or a waxy solid with a faint rose-like odour. It has a melting point of approximately 49–51 °C, a boiling point of 344 °C at standard atmospheric pressure, and a density of 0.818 g/mL (at 25 °C); it is insoluble in water.
1-Hexadecanol is primarily used as a detergent, surfactant, lubricant, pharmaceutical intermediate, raw material for fragrances and household chemicals, a heat-retaining agent for rice paddies, and an analytical chemical reagent; it is also used as a stationary phase in gas chromatography, amongst other applications.
