Inleiding:
Fenolrood, ook bekend als fenolrood, is een donkerrood kristallijn poeder met een molecuulgewicht van 354,38 en een CAS-nummer van 143-74-8. Het is oplosbaar in water, alcohol en aceton en vrijwel onoplosbaar in ether en chloroform. Het is donkerrood wanneer het is opgelost in alkali-hydroxide- of carbonaatoplossing en is stabiel in de lucht. Het kan worden gebruikt als identificatiemedium in microbiële cultuur; een zuur-base-indicator; een bepaling van het totale bloed-koolstofdioxide; een indicator voor de bereiding van disacharide-ijzer-ureummedium bij bacteriële serumtesten, enz.
Toepassingen:
Zuur-base-indicator, kleurveranderingsbereik: pH 6,8 (geel) - 8,4 (rood). Bepaling van de totale hoeveelheid koolstofdioxide in het bloed, indicator voor de bereiding van disacharide-ijzer-ureumcultuurmedium bij bacteriële serumtest. Het natriumzout wordt gebruikt om de leverfunctie te bepalen. Ook gebruikt in biochemisch onderzoek.
