Inleiding:
Kleurloze vloeistof. Smeltpunt 18,17℃, kookpunt 287℃, 149℃ (1,33 kPa); relatieve dichtheid 0,77331 (20/4℃), brekingsindex 1,4335. Vlampunt 135℃. Mengbaar met ether en petroleumether, licht oplosbaar in heet ethanol, onoplosbaar in water.
Gebruiken:
Gebruikt als oplosmiddel, gaschromatografie vergelijkingsmonster en standaardstof voor het bepalen van de dieselverbrandingskwaliteit. Het cetaangetal van diesel is gelijk aan het volumeprocent decadecaan in de standaardbrandstof (een mengsel van hexadecaan en a-methylnaftaleen) wanneer de verbrandingskwaliteit hetzelfde is als die van de te evalueren diesel onder gespecificeerde werkomstandigheden. Het cetaangetal ligt tussen 40-55. De laatste jaren is het synthetische 2,2,4,4,6,6,8,8-heptamethylnonaan (HMN) gebruikt in plaats van a-methylnaftaleen als de standaardstof, en het cetaangetal is vastgesteld op 15. Het cetaangetal van de standaardbrandstof wordt berekend met de volgende formule: Cetaan = 100× (% hexadecaan) + 15× (% HMN). Een mengsel dat bijvoorbeeld 35% hexadecaan en 65% HMN bevat, heeft een cetaangetal van: 100×0,35+15×0,65=45
