HEPES is beschreven als een van de beste all-purpose buffers die beschikbaar zijn voor biologisch onderzoek. Bij biologische pH is het molecuul zwitterionisch en is het effectief als buffer bij pH 6,8 tot 8,2 (pKa 7,55).
