DL-Mevalonolacton is de δ-lactonvorm van mevalonzuur, een voorloper in het mevalonaat-pad. Het induceert depolarisatie en zwelling, vermindert de NADPH-inhoud en aconitase (ACO)-activiteit, en verhoogt de malondialdehydeproductie in met calcium beladen rattenhersenenmitochondriën.
DL-Mevalonolacton keert de afname van glucoseopname geïnduceerd door simvastatine in L6-myotubes om. Weefselniveaus en de uitscheiding van DL-mevalonolacton in de urine zijn verhoogd bij patiënten met mevalonzuuracidurie, een aandoening gekenmerkt door een tekort aan mevalonokinase-activiteit.
