Gold chloride is a golden-yellow crystal that is highly hygroscopic and deliquescent. Adding cold potassium hydroxide to a solution of gold chloride produces an orange-red precipitate of gold hydroxide, Au(OH)3. When it encounters electron-donating ions, such as Cl- or CN-, it forms [AuCl4]- and [Au(CN)4]- complex ions.
