Benzoic Acid (CAS 65-85-0, FEMA 2131) is a white crystalline powder preservative with antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-mold properties. It appears as flake-like or needle-like crystals with a characteristic odor of benzene or formaldehyde.

Solubility Characteristics

Sparingly soluble in water; soluble in ethanol, methanol, benzene, carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride, and turpentine.

Applications & Uses

Benzoic acid serves as a versatile pharmaceutical and preservative agent. In medical applications, it is commonly used topically to treat dermatophytic skin infections. Industrial applications include production of synthetic fibers, resins, coatings, rubber, and tobacco products. It also functions as an antimicrobial agent in latex, toothpaste, jams, and various food products, and serves as a mordant for dyeing and printing processes.

Production Methods

Originally obtained through dry distillation of benzoin resin or hydrolysis with alkaline water, benzoic acid can also be synthesized by hydrolysis of hippuric acid. Modern industrial production involves oxidizing toluene with air using cobalt or manganese catalysts, or hydrolyzing phthalic anhydride to remove the carboxyl group.
