マレイン酸ジメチル（別名ジメチルマレイン酸）は、分子量144.13、沸点200～210℃、密度1.11～1.15g/cm³（25℃）の無色透明な油状液体で、室温で液体です。水にはわずかに溶け（20℃で約77.9g/L）、アルコールやその他の有機溶剤には容易に溶けます。
用途:
マレイン酸ジメチルは、可塑剤、脂肪油の防腐剤、有機合成原料として使用される重要な有機化学原料です。マレイン酸ジメチルは、さまざまな触媒水素化プロセスを通じて、1,4-ブタンジオール、テトラヒドロフラン、γ-ブチロラクトン、コハク酸ジメチルなどを製造するために使用されます。1,4-ブタンジオールとコハク酸ジメチルは、さらに完全に生分解性のプラスチックであるポリブチレンサクシネート（PBS）を製造するために使用できます。
