Overview
γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), also known as 4-aminobutyric acid (4-aminobutyric acid), is widely distributed in plants and animals. It is found in the seeds, rhizomes, and tissue fluid of plants such as Leguminosae, Panax notoginseng, and Chinese herbal medicines. In animals, GABA is found almost exclusively in neural tissue, with concentrations in the brain ranging from approximately 0.1 to 0.6 mg/g. Immunological studies have shown that its highest concentration is in the substantia nigra. GABA is an important inhibitory neurotransmitter that has been extensively studied. It participates in a variety of metabolic processes and possesses high physiological activity.
