Ammonium carbonate, commonly known as ammonium carbonate, is the ammonium salt of carbonate, with the molecular formula (NH4)2CO3. The pure product is colorless or white cubic crystals or powder, with a strong ammonia smell. The industrial product is a complex salt of ammonium bicarbonate and ammonium carbamate, a white, small block or flake or crushed solid product. It often contains 1 molecule of crystal water, is hygroscopic, soluble in water, and decomposes in hot water. It is insoluble in ethanol and carbon disulfide. Ammonium carbonate decomposes rapidly into ammonia, carbon dioxide, and water at 58°C. Ammonium carbonate can be obtained by passing ammonia into a half-time sodium carbonate solution, and the solution crystallizes at 30°C. It gradually loses ammonia in the air to become ammonium bicarbonate.
