Introduction:
Ethyl pyruvate is a clear to yellow liquid with a b.p. of 144°C, n20D of 1.4050, and a relative density of 1.060. It is slightly soluble in water, miscible with ethanol and ethe, and soluble in a variety of organic solvents. It is obtained by the oxidation of ethyl lactate with potassium permanganate.
Uses:
Ethyl pyruvate is an intermediate in the manufacture of the pharmaceutical indopropanol and the pesticide fungicide thiabendazole. As an important pharmaceutical and chemical intermediate, it is widely used in the pharmaceutical, pesticide, flavor and fragrance industries, food additives, air fresheners, and fine chemicals. It can be used to synthesize drugs such as cardiovascular dilators; it can also be used in cosmetics for whitening and skin nourishment, promoting wound healing and preventing and treating skin conditions characterized by cracking, flaking, and scaling; it can be used as a highly effective active ingredient in air fresheners, effectively removing ammonia and methyl mercaptan from the air; its distinctive fragrance lends itself to use in flavors and fragrances; and it is also a key raw material for synthetic resins and plastics.
