Overview

Xylenol orange is a triphenylmethane colorimetric agent with a molecular formula of C₃₁H₃₂N₂O₁₃S and a molecular weight of 672.66. It is a lustrous, reddish-brown crystalline powder. It is highly deliquescent. Its sodium salt is readily soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol and ethe. Due to its o-cresolphthalein structure, the pH of the solution significantly affects its color development. At pH > 6.3, the solution appears red, while at pH < 6.3, it appears yellow. It forms red-purple complexes with most metal ions.
