Introduction:
Magnesium sulfate, also known as esperidin, is a magnesium-containing compound. It appears as colorless or white, easily efflorescent crystals or a white powder. It is odorless and has a bitter, salty taste. It is hygroscopic. Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate loses six molecules of water of crystallization at 150°C and all of its water of crystallization at 200°C. The anhydrous form has a density of 2.66 and a melting point of 1124°C, during which it decomposes. It is readily soluble in water, soluble in alcohols, ethers, and glycerol, but insoluble in aceton.
Uses:
In the dyeing and printing industry, this product is used as a developing salt for blue dyes and as an alkali absorbent in black liquor to ensure uniform dyeing at a pH between 6 and 7. It can also be used as a cement fire retardant, a paper filler, a weighting agent for textiles, and a desiccant. In medicine, it is used as a laxative. It is also used in the leather, explosives, fertilizer, paper, porcelain, and dyeing and printing industries.
