Introduction:
Salicylic acid, also known as willow acid, is a stronger acid than benzoic acid. It darkens in color under sunlight, forms a purplish-red chelate with iron ions, and reacts with ferric chloride to produce a purple color. It is thermally unstable, readily decarboxylating to form phenol when heated to 200℃. In nature, salicylic acid exists primarily as a methyl ester in birch bark oil, accounting for up to 96% of its composition. It is also found in cinnamon oil, violet oil, and wintergreen oil. Only small amounts of free salicylic acid exist in plants.
Uses:
Salicylic acid is an important raw material for fine chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, fragrances, dyes, and rubber additives. In the pharmaceutical industry, salicylic acid is used as a disinfectant and antiseptic for treating localized hyperkeratosis and fungal skin infections. In the rubber industry, it is used to produce anti-scorching agents, ultraviolet absorbers, and foaming agents. Salicylic acid can also be used as a curing agent for phenolic resins, a preservative for textile printing and dyeing sizing agents, and a swelling agent (dyeing accelerator) in the dyeing of synthetic fibers.
