Ethyl cyanoacrylate is an organic chemical that cures rapidly at room temperature; it is the key ingredient in the widely known "502 glue." This colorless, transparent liquid undergoes polymerization upon contact with trace amounts of moisture in the air, instantly hardening to bond objects together. While used in industrial bonding, it also has applications in medical suturing and cosmetics; however, a distinction must be made between industrial-grade and medical-grade versions, as research by the U.S. National Institutes of Health indicates that its short-chain structure is more irritating than that of long-chain medical-grade adhesives.
"502 glue," formulated from ethyl cyanoacrylate, is commonly used to bond materials—such as steel, non-ferrous metals, rubber, leather, plastics, ceramics, wood, glass, and flexible materials (including rubber products, leather footwear, and both soft and rigid plastics)—either to themselves or to one another. It finds widespread application across diverse sectors, including electrical appliances, instrumentation, machinery, electronics, optical instruments, medical equipment, light industry, and consumer goods.
