In its pure form, it is white; impure samples are generally gray or pale yellow. It appears as a dense mass or a loose powder and has an earthy odor. It darkens upon absorbing water and emits a distinctive clay-like smell. Its relative density ranges from 2.54 to 2.60, and its melting point is approximately 1785°C. It possesses excellent lubricity and is non-combustible. It is insoluble in water, ethanol, dilute acids, and alkaline solutions, but becomes plastic when kneaded with water.
Used as a desiccant softener and a liquid clarifying agent. Serves as a catalyst carrier in organic synthesis. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a catalyst, carrier, and mordant for organic synthesis. It also finds application as a clarifying agent and in the production of ceramic cements and refractory materials.
