Plasticizer Benzyl Benzoate CAS 120-51-4 Colorless Liquid for Cellulose Acetate Compounds

Benzyl benzoate (CAS 120-51-4) is a high boiling ester plasticiser with a boiling point of 323 degrees C, which makes it one of the few primary plasticisers that stays in a film instead of migrating out during service. In cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate and ethyl cellulose it lowers the glass transition temperature, improves elongation and reduces brittleness, while its aromatic ring keeps it compatible with the polymer rather than bleeding to the surface.

Formulators choose it where a phthalate free plasticiser is required and where fogging, plate out or weight loss during heat ageing cannot be tolerated. Our plasticiser grade is specified on acid value and moisture, the two parameters that decide whether a cellulose ester compound stays clear and colour stable through extrusion or solvent casting.

Applications include cellulose acetate film and sheet, cellulose nitrate lacquers, ethyl cellulose coatings, hot melt and solvent based adhesives, printing ink vehicles, and polyurethane and epoxy systems where a non migrating aromatic ester is wanted. It is also used in nail lacquer, carbon paper and transfer coatings for the same reason.

For cellulose acetate, a loading of 15 to 25 phr usually gives the best balance of flexibility and tensile strength; the plasticiser is added with the polymer under high shear at 80 to 100 degrees C, or dissolved in the solvent system for cast film. Packing is 25 kg plastic drum, 225 kg iron drum with phenolic epoxy lining, or 1000 kg IBC. Drums are sealed, labelled with lot number, net weight, CAS number, production date and the applicable GHS symbols, and can be nitrogen blanketed for moisture sensitive processes.

Store below 30 degrees C in a ventilated area away from oxidisers and open flame. Delivery from Shanghai takes 7 to 15 working days, with FCL and LCL options and English documentation for customs clearance.

The Certificate of Analysis reports assay, colour, water, acid value, refractive index, specific gravity and volatility, so a compounder can compare each delivery against the original qualification batch. A retention sample of 500 g is kept for 24 months.
