Ink Solvent Benzyl Benzoate CAS 120-51-4 Gravure Printing Grade Colorless Liquid

Printing ink formulators use benzyl benzoate (CAS 120-51-4) as a high boiling, strongly solvating liquid that keeps dye and resin in solution all the way from the ink trough to the drying tunnel. With a boiling point of 323 degrees C and a very low evaporation rate, it does not flash off at the press and therefore does not cause the viscosity drift, skinning in the duct or dried ink on the doctor blade that fast solvents produce.

Its aromatic structure dissolves a wide range of dyestuffs and cellulose based resins that resist ordinary ester and alcohol solvents, which is why it appears in ballpoint and rollerball ink vehicles, in carbon paper and transfer coatings, and in gravure inks where colour strength has to survive a long press run. Our ink grade is filtered and specified for low residue on evaporation so that no grit reaches the printing nip.

• Broad solvency for dyes and resins: dissolves dye classes and cellulose ester resins that resist conventional ester solvents
• Residue on evaporation 0.01% maximum: no grit or sediment at the doctor blade, protecting fine gravure cells and print quality
• Colour 20 APHA maximum: does not shift the shade of light and transparent inks
• Low water content: prevents haze and hazing in moisture sensitive resin systems
• Non corrosive to press components: safe with standard gravure and flexo ink train metallurgy

Applications include gravure and flexographic inks for packaging film, ballpoint and rollerball pen inks, carbon paper and thermal transfer coatings, dye based inkjet formulations, and casting and laminating lacquers where a high boiling latent solvent is required.

Typical addition is 3 to 10 percent of the ink formulation as a latent solvent or dye solubiliser, or up to 40 percent in ballpoint ink vehicles. Because the boiling point is high, it should be balanced with faster solvents in the let down to keep drying within press capability; our technical note gives an evaporation ladder for common co solvents.

Packed in 25 kg plastic drum, 225 kg iron drum with phenolic epoxy lining, and 1000 kg IBC. All packaging is compatible with standard ink plant pumping and dosing equipment, and labels include lot number, net weight, CAS number and GHS symbols.

Store below 30 degrees C in a cool ventilated area away from ignition sources and oxidisers. Delivery from Shanghai takes 7 to 15 working days, with English documentation and, where required, a non dangerous goods declaration for air freight.

Each batch is released with a Certificate of Analysis reporting assay, colour, residue on evaporation, water and acidity, plus a filtration check at 1 micron. A 500 g retention sample is stored for 24 months.

We supply a GHS safety data sheet, a technical data sheet with the evaporation ladder, and a declaration confirming the absence of SVHC above 0.1 percent. On request the material can be pre filtered to 0.5 micron in an ISO 9001 controlled packing line for high specification ink makers.
