The material is used as a calibration and system suitability standard for gas chromatography of fragrance allergens and cosmetic preservatives, as a reference for the determination of benzyl benzoate residues in food packaging and textiles, and as a solvent and internal standard in spectroscopic and chromatographic method development.

For residual analysis in cosmetics, a typical method dilutes the sample in ethanol and quantifies against a four point calibration from 10 to 200 mg/L on a 30 m non polar column with FID detection.
