Galvanizing Brightener 2-Chlorobenzaldehyde CAS 89-98-5 Zinc Plating Additive Liquid

In zinc electroplating, 2-chlorobenzaldehyde (CAS 89-98-5) is the aromatic aldehyde component of brightener systems that refine grain structure and produce a levelled, mirror bright deposit. It works in combination with a carrier polyether and a secondary brightener, adsorbing on the high current density areas and slowing deposition there, which is exactly how a plated part loses its dull edge and develops an even, fully bright surface.

Plating baths are sensitive to impurity build up, so the grade supplied to plating chemical formulators is specified with tight limits on acidity and on the chlorobenzoic acid content that consumes brightener and shortens bath life. Our galvanizing grade dissolves cleanly in the brightener concentrate, does not give the haze that a wet or partly oxidised batch produces, and is consistent enough that a plating line can keep the same make up rate for months.

• Low free acid and low acid value: clean dissolution in brightener concentrates without haze or turbidity in the plating bath
• Consistent colour, 50 APHA maximum: no colour carry over into the brightener concentrate or the plated deposit

• Low water content: prevents hydrolysis in the concentrate and gives a longer shelf life in the plating shop
• Plating trial support: we will run a Hull cell evaluation with the customer's bath chemistry before a bulk commitment

Used as the aldehyde brightener component in alkaline non cyanide and acid chloride zinc plating baths for fasteners, wire, tube, stampings and die castings, and in the formulation of brightener concentrates sold to plating shops.

A typical brightener concentrate carries 1 to 5 percent of the aldehyde together with a carrier and a secondary brightener; the working bath then receives 1 to 4 mL per litre of that concentrate. Because the aldehyde is consumed by drag out and by reaction at the cathode, the concentration is normally controlled by Hull cell testing rather than by analysis, and our technical note gives a Hull cell procedure with reference panels.

Supplied in 25 kg plastic drums for formulators and 250 kg iron drums with phenolic epoxy lining for concentrate production. Drums are nitrogen blanketed to limit oxidation, sealed, and labelled with lot number, assay, production date and GHS hazard symbols.

Store below 30 degrees C in a cool, dry, ventilated chemical store away from amines, oxidisers and ignition sources. The product is an irritant and a lachrymator, so decanting should be done with ventilation and eye protection. Shipments leave within 7 to 15 working days.

Each lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis reporting assay, free acid, water, colour, density and refractive index, plus the GC chromatogram. A 200 g retention sample is stored for 18 months so a plating defect can be traced back to the raw material batch.
