Emulsion Polymerization Surfactant CAS 120478-49-1 Sodium NAPE Sulfate Solution

In emulsion polymerization the surfactant decides particle size, particle size distribution and the amount of coagulum on the reactor wall. Nonylphenol ethoxylate sulfates are used as primary emulsifiers because the sulfate head group gives strong electrostatic stabilisation while the ethoxylate chain provides steric repulsion, and that combination tolerates the electrolyte levels and shear found in a real latex reactor.

This 30 percent sodium salt solution is supplied as a ready to use emulsifier for acrylic, styrene acrylic and vinyl acetate systems. The active content is set so the product can be charged directly to the reactor without dilution, and the salt level is controlled to keep the latex conductivity in a range that does not disturb the initiator system or the final film properties.

Used as the primary or co emulsifier in acrylic, styrene acrylic, vinyl acetate and vinyl versatate emulsion polymerisation, and in the manufacture of pressure sensitive adhesive, paint and textile binder latices.

Typical charge is 0.5 to 2.0 percent on monomer weight, split between the reactor heel and the monomer pre emulsion. Higher levels reduce particle size and improve stability but increase water sensitivity of the film, so the level is normally optimised against a coagulum and film resistance target. Our technical note includes particle size data against emulsifier level for a standard acrylic recipe.

Packed in 200 kg plastic drums and 1000 kg IBC tanks, sealed and labelled with lot number, active content, conductivity and production date. The product is compatible with standard reactor charging systems and drum pumps.

Store between 5 and 35 degrees C and protect from frost; the solution should not be stored above 40 degrees C for extended periods. Shipments leave within 7 to 15 working days with COA, TDS and safety data sheet.

Each lot is released with a Certificate of Analysis reporting active content, pH, cloud point, unsulfated matter, free nonylphenol, sodium sulfate, conductivity, density and viscosity. A 250 g retention sample is kept for 12 months.

For markets where nonylphenol ethoxylates are restricted in the end application we can quote an alcohol ethoxylate sulfate alternative that matches the particle size behaviour.
