Pharmaceutical Intermediate Valerophenone CAS 1009-14-9 99.5% Purity Colorless Liquid

Valerophenone (CAS 1009-14-9), also traded as n-butyl phenyl ketone, is a straight chain aromatic ketone that pharmaceutical process groups use to build the phenylpentyl skeleton found in several active substances. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature that dissolves readily in alcohols, esters and aromatic solvents, and it reacts predictably in reductive amination, Grignard addition and enolate chemistry.

For a pharmaceutical route, the impurities that matter are the ones that survive into the drug substance. This grade is fractionally distilled to 99.5 percent with aldehyde and acid limits set deliberately low, because residual aldehyde from the Friedel-Crafts step reacts with amines to give imine by products that are difficult to purge, and residual acid catalyses self condensation during storage and shifts the colour of the batch.

Used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceutical active substances built on the phenylpentyl framework, in reductive amination and Grignard routes to substituted amines and alcohols, and in the preparation of reference compounds for process development.

Charge the ketone under nitrogen for organometallic steps and keep the drum sealed between uses; the liquid absorbs oxygen slowly and the resulting acid accelerates colour drift. For route scouting we supply 1 kg amber glass bottles so a process can be locked before bulk quantities are ordered.

Packed in 1 kg amber glass bottles for laboratory work, 25 kg plastic drums for pilot batches and 200 kg iron drums with phenolic epoxy lining for production. Containers are nitrogen blanketed, sealed and labelled with lot number, assay, water content and production date.

Store between 5 and 25 degrees C in a dry, ventilated area away from oxidisers and ignition sources. The flash point of 102 degrees C means it is combustible but not highly flammable; a GHS format safety data sheet accompanies every first shipment.

Each batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis reporting assay, aldehyde content, water, acid value, colour, density and refractive index, together with the GC chromatogram. A 200 g retention sample is stored for 24 months for traceability and dispute resolution.
