Photoinitiator Co-Sensitizer Valerophenone CAS 1009-14-9 UV Curing Grade Liquid

In UV curing, aromatic ketones work as hydrogen abstractors: after absorbing light they pull a hydrogen atom from a co initiator or from the resin backbone and generate the radicals that start polymerisation. Valerophenone (CAS 1009-14-9) is used in that role because its absorption and triplet behaviour sit in a useful window, its fragmentation products are low odour compared with the classic amines, and it stays in the film rather than evaporating at the lamp.

For a coating formulator, the practical result is faster surface cure and a harder, less tacky film at the same lamp dose, particularly in acrylate systems where oxygen inhibition otherwise leaves a soft surface. This grade is specified for water, acidity and colour, since each of those either quenches the excited state or yellows the cured film, and it is packed in amber glass or nitrogen blanketed drums to keep the specification intact.

Used as a photoinitiator or co sensitizer in UV curable coatings, flexographic and offset inks, adhesives and 3D printing resins, usually at 1 to 4 percent on resin solids alongside a benzophenone or thioxanthone primary initiator.

Because cure response depends on lamp spectrum and on the resin, we recommend a dosage ladder of 1, 2 and 3 percent tested at the production lamp dose, measuring surface tack, pendulum hardness and adhesion. Our technical note includes cure speed data against dosage in a standard epoxy acrylate and a urethane acrylate system.

Packed in 1 kg amber glass bottles for formulation trials, 25 kg plastic drums and 200 kg iron drums for production, nitrogen blanketed where the container will be stored for long periods. Labels record lot number, assay, UV absorbance and production date.

Store between 5 and 25 degrees C in an opaque or amber container away from light and oxidisers; the product should not be left in clear glass on a sunlit bench. Shipments leave within 7 to 15 working days with COA, TDS and safety data sheet.

Each lot is released with a Certificate of Analysis reporting assay, water, acid value, colour, UV absorbance maximum and density, plus the GC chromatogram. A 200 g retention sample is kept for 24 months.
