Electroplating Additive Intermediate 1-Ethynyl-1-Cyclohexanol CAS 78-27-3 Brightener Base

In plating baths, acetylenic alcohols act on the deposit rather than on the metal: they adsorb at the growth sites and level the coating. 1-Ethynyl-1-cyclohexanol is used as a brightener base, often after ethoxylation to tune the cloud point so it works at the bath temperature you actually run.

The plating customer cares about two things we can control. One is water, because a wet drum gives a hazy concentrate and a bath that needs more filtration. The other is colour, because a dark base carries through into the additive and the additive supplier hears about it from the plating shop.

• Brightener base for nickel and zinc: known behaviour in ethoxylation and in direct addition packages
• Water 0.2% maximum: clear concentrate, no haze in the made up additive
• Colour of melt APHA 30 or better: pale additive that does not darken the bath
• Cyclohexanone under 0.8%: no odour and no interference with the deposit appearance
• Double PE lined drums: solid stays free flowing and does not pick up moisture in transit
• Technical support: starting dosage ranges for common bath types available on request

Brightener and leveller base in nickel, zinc and zinc nickel baths, usually ethoxylated or propoxylated before use, and as a component in secondary brightener packages where the deposit needs a fine grain.

Bath concentrations are typically in the low milligrams per litre range for the active material, so the base is normally made into a concentrate first. Keep the concentrate at neutral pH; strongly alkaline conditions accelerate colour formation in storage.

Store below 25 degrees C, dry, sealed, away from oxidisers. If the drum is kept above 30 degrees C the contents melt, so handle it as a liquid and keep the drum upright.

COA with assay, cyclohexanone, water, melting point and colour of melt, plus the GC trace. A 250 g retention sample is kept for 18 months.
