Ethylmagnesium Bromide CAS 925-90-6 3.0M Grignard Reagent Solution in THF

Ethylmagnesium bromide is the workhorse Grignard when you want to add an ethyl group: ketones to tertiary alcohols, esters to tertiary alcohols, nitriles to ketones after hydrolysis. The 3.0 M concentration in THF is the plant standard because it puts more moles in the reactor per charge and leaves less solvent to strip afterwards.

Every lot is titrated before release and the figure on the certificate is what you should calculate from, not the nominal 3.0 M. The solution is filled under nitrogen into septum bottles and drums, and the drum is pressure tested before it leaves because a leaking Grignard drum is a fire, not a complaint.

• Titrated per lot: calculate the charge from the measured molarity, not the label
• 3.0 M in THF: more moles per charge and less solvent to remove downstream
• Low magnesium salt turbidity: clear solution that transfers cleanly and does not block a cannula
• Nitrogen filled septum bottles: syringe or cannula transfer without opening to air
• Drums pressure tested: no leaking closure on a water reactive material
• Chloride under 0.3%: no competing halide in the coupling step

Ethyl addition to ketones, aldehydes and esters, preparation of tertiary alcohols, conversion of nitriles to ketones after hydrolysis, and as a base for deprotonation where a non nucleophilic strong base is needed.

Add the substrate to the Grignard rather than the other way round for ketone additions, keep the pot below reflux, and quench into dilute acid with good stirring. Titrate before use if the drum has been open for more than a month; the molarity drops slowly even under nitrogen.

1 L and 4 L septum bottles, 20 L and 200 L drums, all filled under nitrogen with pressure tested closures. Labels record the titrated molarity and the date of titration.

Store between 5 and 25 degrees C, sealed under nitrogen, away from water and ignition sources. Class 4.3 water reactive and class 3 flammable; UN 3399 packaging with IMDG documentation for sea freight.

COA with titrated molarity, chloride, appearance and turbidity, plus the titration method used. A retention sample per lot is kept for 12 months under nitrogen.
