Neutral red, dark green powder obtained in 50% ethanol. Soluble in water or alcohol, it turns red. Its solubility in water, anhydrous ethanol, and ethylene glycol-ethe is 4%, 1.8%, and 3.75%, respectively. It is insoluble in xylene.

Neutral red can be used as an acid-base indicator, with a pH range of 6.8 (red) to 8.0 (yellow). It is an indicator of the alkalinity of water, nitrite, and urine. In histochemistry, it is used as an indicator of fat hydrolysis. It is also a good biological stain; it is used for Nissl granule staining of nerve cells and, togethe with Janus green, for in vitro vital staining of blood. Neutral red has a wide range of applications, including photometric determination of iodide ions and preparation of neutral red test paper.
