Ethyleendiaminetetra-azijnzuur (EDTA) bevat 4 carboxylgroepen en kan over het algemeen di-, tri- en tetra-zouten vormen. Veelvoorkomende EDTA-zouten zijn onder andere dinatriumethyleendiaminetetraacetaat (EDTA-2Na), tetranatriumethyleendiaminetetraacetaat (EDTA-4Na), dikaliumethyleendiaminetetraacetaat (EDTA-2K) en trikaliumethyleendiaminetetraacetaat (EDTA-3K). Tetranatriumethyleendiaminetetraacetaat (EDTA-4Na) is een multifunctionele organische kleine molecule die amino- en carboxylgroepen bevat. Het wordt veel gebruikt in de analytische chemie als complexvormer. Het is breed verkrijgbaar en goedkoop.
Gebruik:
Tetranatrium EDTA is een belangrijke complexvormer en metaalmaskeermiddel. Het kan worden gebruikt in textielverven, waterbehandeling, kleurenfotosensibilisatie, geneeskunde, de dagelijkse chemische industrie, papierproductie en andere industrieën als additief, activator, waterzuiveraar, metaalionenmaskeermiddel en activator in de styreen-butadieenrubberindustrie. In de droge acrylindustrie kan het metaalinterferentie compenseren en de kleur en helderheid van de geverfde stof verbeteren.
