Inleiding:
Koperoxide is een anorganische stof met de chemische formule CuO. Het is een zwart koperoxide, licht amfoteer en licht hygroscopisch. Het is onoplosbaar in water, gemakkelijk oplosbaar in zuur, stabiel bij hitte en ontleedt in zuurstof bij hoge temperaturen. Het kan worden gereduceerd tot metallisch koper door waterstof of koolmonoxide bij hoge temperaturen te laten passeren. Wanneer koperoxide in de lucht wordt verhit, komt er zuurstof vrij bij ongeveer 1050°C en wordt het gereduceerd tot koper(I)oxide. In een waterstof- of koolmonoxide stroom kan het gemakkelijk worden gereduceerd tot metallisch koper, zelfs beneden 250°C. Hoewel koperoxide onoplosbaar is in water, kan het worden opgelost in een waterige oplossing van alkalimetaalhydroxide.
Toepassingen:
Het wordt gebruikt als kleurstof in de glas-, emaille- en keramische industrie, als anti-rimpelmiddel voor verven en als polijstmiddel voor optisch glas. Het wordt gebruikt voor het maken van kleurstoffen, dragers voor organische katalysatoren en koperverbindingen. Het wordt ook gebruikt in de kunstzijde-industrie en als ontzwavelingsmiddel voor oliën en vetten. Het wordt gebruikt als grondstof voor de productie van andere kopers zouten en is ook een grondstof voor het maken van kunstmatige edelstenen.
