Methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide can be used as a Wittig reagent for the preparation of alkenes and for increasing the carbon number of unsaturated carbon chains. It is a ylide precursor for the Wittig reaction and is widely used in the synthesis of unsaturated bonds in liquid crystal materials. It also has a wide range of applications in organic synthesis.
