Introduction:
Methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide appears as white crystals with a melting point of 234-235°C. It is a solid quaternary phosphonium salt flame retardant. Currently, halogenated flame retardants are the most widely used organic flame retardants, offering excellent flame retardancy. However, when a fire occurs, these halogenated flame retardants release large amounts of smoke and toxic hydrogen halide gas, causing secondary hazards. With the promulgation of the EU RoHs and WEEE directives, the use of organic halogenated flame retardants in areas such as electronic and electrical equipment has been significantly restricted. Therefore, the development of highly effective halogen-free flame retardants has become a crucial issue.
Uses:

Methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide can be used as a Wittig reagent for the preparation of alkenes and for increasing the carbon number of unsaturated carbon chains. It is a ylide precursor for the Wittig reaction and is widely used in the synthesis of unsaturated bonds in liquid crystal materials. It also has a wide range of applications in organic synthesis. It is an excellent cationic phase transition catalyst.
