Introduction:
Sodium fluorescein is odorless and hygroscopic. It is soluble in water, and the solution is yellow-red with a very strong yellow-green fluorescence, which disappears after acidification and reappears after neutralization or alkalization. It is slightly soluble in ethanol and almost insoluble in chloroform. The aqueous solution is isotonic with plasma.
Uses:
Sodium fluorescein has been used as a fluorescent tracer to study the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) in rodent models. Organic anion transporting polypeptide (OATP)-mediated hepatic drug transport of Chemicalbook has been studied using this dye as a probe substrate. Sodium fluorescein has also been applied to the entry of in situ solutes into bone by fluorescence recovery after photofading. Sodium fluorescein has been used as a solute to study microvascular permeability. It has been used as a test molecule to study blood barrier permeability. Same as fluorescein.
