Introduction:
Magnesium fluoride, chemical formula MgF2, molecular weight 62.31, is a colorless tetrahedral crystal or white powder. It fluoresces purple under light. It is soluble in nitric acid, sparingly soluble in water and ethanol. Melting point 1248℃, boiling point 2239℃, relative density 3.148.It can be obtained by reacting magnesium carbonate or magnesium oxide with hydrofluoric acid, or by reacting magnesium sulfate with sodium fluoride.
Uses:
Magnesium fluoride can be used to manufacture ceramics, glass, as a flux in magnesium smelting, and as a coating for lenses and filters in optical instruments. It is also used in fluorescent materials for cathode ray screens, as a refractive agent and welding agent for optical lenses, and as a coating agent for titanium pigments.
