Potassium pyrophosphate, also known as tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, is produced by melting dipotassium hydrogen phosphate and losing water molecules. At room temperature, it is a white crystalline powder or granules. It is highly hygroscopic in air, readily soluble in water, but insoluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution is alkaline and has the effect of inhibiting food spoilage and fermentation. The pH value of a 1% aqueous solution is about 10.5. At 25°C, the solubility of potassium pyrophosphate in 100g of water is 187g. In acidic or alkaline solutions, it hydrolyzes into potassium phosphate, which, when mixed with water, forms a viscous paste.

It is mainly used in cyanide-free electroplating, replacing sodium cyanide as a complexing agent. It is also used as a pretreatment agent for electroplating and in pyrophosphate plating solutions. It is used as an additive in the formulation of detergent components for clothing, metal surface cleaners, bottle cleaners, and various cleaning agents. In the ceramics industry, it is used as a clay dispersant, and as a dispersant and buffer for pigments and dyes. In the dyeing and bleaching industry, it is used to remove trace amounts of ferric ions from water, improving dyeing and bleaching quality.
