Ammonium Salt NAPE 14-90 Surfactant CAS 120478-49-1 Acid Zinc Plating Carrier

Ralufon NAPE 14-90 type products are ammonium nonylphenol ethoxylate sulfates with fourteen ethylene oxide units and a nominal 90 percent active content. In acid zinc electrolytes this molecule does two jobs at once: the sulfated polyethylene oxide chain adsorbs on the cathode and levels the deposit, while the nonylphenol tail provides the surface activity that keeps hydrogen bubbles from adhering to the work, so pitting and dull patches are suppressed even on complex shaped parts.

Because the salt is ammonium rather than sodium, the product adds no alkali metal to the bath, which matters in chloride zinc systems where sodium accumulation eventually disturbs the ammonium chloride balance and forces a partial dump. At 90 percent active it also carries very little water, so a formulator can build a concentrate without paying freight for water and without a preservative requirement in the finished brightener package.

Used as the carrier and wetting agent in acid chloride zinc plating, in zinc nickel and zinc cobalt alloy electrolytes, and as the surfactant component of brightener concentrates supplied to job shops plating fasteners, stampings and wire.

A typical brightener concentrate carries 15 to 30 percent of this product together with the aldehyde brightener and a secondary brightener; the working bath then receives 1 to 5 mL per litre. Where foaming is observed in air agitated lines, reduce the concentrate addition or add a small amount of antifoam, since the active is designed for low but not zero foam.

Packed in 25 kg HDPE jerry cans, 200 kg plastic drums and 1000 kg IBC tanks. Containers are sealed, labelled with lot number, active content, pH and production date, and are suitable for direct pump connection on the plating line.

Store between 5 and 35 degrees C and protect from frost; the product becomes very viscous below 5 degrees C but recovers on warming without loss of activity. Shipments leave Shanghai within 7 to 15 working days with COA, TDS and a GHS safety data sheet.

Each batch is released with a Certificate of Analysis reporting active content, pH, cloud point, unsulfated matter, free nonylphenol, sodium chloride, density and viscosity. A 250 g retention sample is kept for 24 months so a plating defect can be traced to the raw material lot.
