2-Methyltetrahydrofuran Ethylmagnesium Bromide 1.0M CAS 925-90-6 Solution

2-Methyltetrahydrofuran is the solvent a process chemist switches to when THF becomes a problem. It is made from renewable feedstock, it has a much higher flash point, and it separates from water more cleanly, which matters when the quench produces a brine layer that will not split.

The trade off is that Grignard formation and stability in 2-MeTHF differ slightly from THF, so the solution has to be made and titrated rather than diluted from a THF stock. Ours is prepared directly in 2-MeTHF at 1.0 M, filtered and filled under nitrogen.

Customers usually move here for one of three reasons: a safety review that objects to THF, a solvent recovery target, or a scale up where the aqueous separation was the bottleneck.

Ethyl additions in processes where THF is restricted by a safety review, solvent recovery programmes where a higher boiling solvent is easier to strip and reuse, and reactions where the aqueous work up needs a clean phase split.

Expect a slightly slower initiation than in THF and allow for it in the addition profile. Because 2-MeTHF is less miscible with water, check the phase split on a small sample before running the full quench on a new substrate.

Store between 5 and 25 degrees C under nitrogen. UN 3399 water reactive and flammable; sea freight is the normal route, air for bottles.
