Inleiding:

 

Glyoxylzuur, ook bekend als mierenzuur, gehydrateerd glyoxylzuur en oxoazijnzuur, heeft de chemische formule C2H2O3. Het is het eenvoudigste aldehydezuur en komt voor in onrijp fruit, jonge groene bladeren en suikerbieten. Gekristalliseerd uit water is het een monokliene kristal (met 1/2 kristalwater). De relatieve molecuulmassa is 70,04. Het smeltpunt is 98°C. Het bestaat in gehydrateerde vorm in waterige oplossing.

 

Toepassingen:

 

1. Glyoxylzuur is het eenvoudigste ketozuur (aldehydezuur), dat de eigenschappen van zowel zuur als aldehyde heeft. Het wordt gebruikt als grondstof voor vernis, een tussenproduct voor specerijen, medicijnen, kleurstoffen, kunststoffen en huishoudchemicaliën.
2. Het wordt gebruikt als geur- en fixeermiddel voor cosmetica en voor farmaceutische producten
