Colorless to slightly yellow liquid with the aroma of lemon, citronella and rose. It exists in three optically active forms: d-, l- and dl-. D-Citronellal is present in large quantities in essential oils and is the main component of citronella oil and eucalyptus oil. It is soluble in ethanol and most non-volatile oils, slightly soluble in volatile oils and propylene glycol, and insoluble in glycerin and water.
