Product Description
Cuprous Oxide CAS 1317-39-1 Ceramic Colouring Agent Crop Fungicide
Introduction:
Cupric oxide, chemical formula Cu₂O. Molecular weight 143.08. Deep red cubic crystals or orange-yellow crystalline powder, toxic. Occurs naturally as cuprite. Whilst stable in dry air, it gradually oxidises to copper oxide in moist air. Insoluble in water and ethanol, it dissolves in dilute sulphuric acid, undergoing disproportionation to form copper sulphate and metallic copper. Dissolution in nitric acid oxidises it to copper nitrate. Dissolution in concentrated hydrochloric acid or ammonia solution yields the stable complex H₃[CuCl₄] or the colourless coordination ion [Cu(NH₃)₂]⁺ respectively.
Uses:

Cuprous oxide may be employed as a colouring agent (red) in the manufacture of red glass, red porcelain glazes, and ceramics; as a fungicide for agricultural crops; as a rectifier material; and in ship bottom paints. It is also utilised in the electroplating industry and as an organic synthesis catalyst. Cuprous oxide may serve as a reducing agent for determining nitrogen in azo compounds.
