Introductie:
Koper(I)oxide, chemische formule Cu₂O. Molecuulgewicht 143,08. Dieprode kubische kristallen of oranje-gele kristallijne poeder, giftig. Komt van nature voor als cuprite. Hoewel stabiel in droge lucht, oxideert het geleidelijk tot koperoxide in vochtige lucht. Onoplosbaar in water en ethanol, lost het op in verdund zwavelzuur, waarbij het disproportionering ondergaat om kopersulfaat en metallisch koper te vormen. Oplossing in salpeterzuur oxideert het tot kopernitraat. Oplossing in geconcentreerd zoutzuur of ammoniakoplossing levert het stabiele complex H₃[CuCl₄] of het kleurloze coördinatie-ion [Cu(NH₃)₂]⁺ respectievelijk op.
Toepassingen:
Koper(I)oxide kan worden gebruikt als kleurstof (rood) bij de productie van rood glas, rode porseleinglazuur en keramiek; als fungicide voor landbouwgewassen; als gelijkrichter materiaal; en in scheepsbodemverf. Het wordt ook gebruikt in de galvanische industrie en als katalysator voor organische synthese. Koper(I)oxide kan dienen als reductiemiddel voor het bepalen van stikstof in azo-verbindingen.
