Een kleurloze tot gele olieachtige vloeistof. Het heeft een milde, zoete roosachtige geur en een bittere smaak. Het is oplosbaar in organische oplosmiddelen en licht oplosbaar in water.
Geraniol dient als een primaire component voor roosachtige geuren en is een onmisbaar ingrediënt in diverse bloemengeuren; het kan ook fungeren als zoetstof en wordt gebruikt bij het formuleren van geuren voor voedingsmiddelen, zepen en dagelijkse cosmetica. Producten afgeleid van natuurlijke etherische oliën bevatten meer dan 90% geraniol bij gebruik voor voedings- en cosmetische geuren, en meer dan 80% bij gebruik voor zeepgeuren. Industrieel geraniol en nerol dienen als grondstoffen voor de productie van geranyl-esters, vanilline, citral, hydroxycitronellal, iononen en vitamine A; diverse esters gesynthetiseerd uit geraniol maken ook uitstekende geurstoffen.
