A colorless to yellow oily liquid. It has a mild, sweet rose-like aroma and a bitter taste. It is soluble in organic solvents and slightly soluble in water.
Geraniol serves as a primary component for rose-type fragrances and is an indispensable ingredient in various floral fragrances; it can also function as a sweetening agent and is used in formulating fragrances for foods, soaps, and daily-use cosmetics. Products derived from natural essential oils contain over 90% geraniol when used for food and cosmetic fragrances, and over 80% when used for soap fragrances. Industrial-grade geraniol and nerol serve as raw materials for the production of geranyl esters, vanillin, citral, hydroxycitronellal, ionones, and Vitamin A; various esters synthesized from geraniol also make excellent fragrance ingredients.
