Introduction:
A colourless, oily, combustible liquid which crystallises into white crystals below its freezing point. Melting point 24°C (freezing point 25.15°C), boiling point 161.10°C, relative density 0.9493 (20/4°C), refractive index 1.4648, flash point (open cup) 67.2°C, viscosity (30°C) 41.067 mPa·s. Miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol, ethyl acetate, and linseed oil; slightly soluble in water. Explosive limits in air mixture: 1.52%–11.1% (by volume). Possesses a camphor-like odour and exhibits hygroscopic properties.
Uses:
Cyclohexanol is an important chemical raw material, primarily used in the production of adipic acid, hexamethylenediamine, cyclohexanone, caprolactam. It also serves as a stabiliser in soap formulations, facilitating the manufacture of medicated antiseptic soaps and detergent emulsions. Additionally, it functions as a solvent for rubber, resins, nitrocellulose, metal soaps, oils, esters, and ethers; as an admixture in coatings; and as a degreasing agent, release agent, dry-cleaning solvent, and polishing agent for leather. Cyclohexanol also serves as a raw material for textile finishing agents, insecticides, and plasticisers. Its reaction with phosgene yields cyclohexyl chloroformate, an intermediate in the synthesis of dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonate as an initiator.
