Overview
Dipentaerythritol, also known as 2,2-[oxybis(methylene)- bis[2-hydroxymethyl]-1,3-propanediol, is a byproduct of pentaerythritol production. Because of its low solubility in water (022 g/100 g H20 at 20 °C and 10.0 g/100 g H20 at 100 °C) it can be separated from pentaerythritol by fractional crystallization.
Dipentaerythritol can be produced intentionally from pentaerythritol by acid catalysis. Dipentaerythritol is purified as a coproduct by many pentaerythritol producers.

- Serves as key polyol intermediate for manufacturing alkyd, polyester, polyurethane, polyether and UV‑curable photosensitive resins, improving coating hardness, weather resistance and anti‑aging performance for paints, varnishes and printing materials.
- Used as co‑stabilizer for calcium‑zinc PVC thermal stabilizer system, enhancing thermal stability during PVC processing for pipes, profiles and plastic products; also applied in intumescent fire‑retardant coatings.
- Applied to synthesize high‑grade synthetic ester lubricants for aviation and refrigeration equipment, as well as rosin esters and acrylic monomers for UV curing formulations.
- Acts as fine‑chemical building block for production of plasticizers, adhesives and special‑purpose derivatives in coating and polymer industries.
